Fountain pen sacs can be found it two standard materials: latex and silicone. Silicone offers an added advantage that it is inert to the chemical properties of inks and will not ossify like latex.
[edit] Straight Sacs
Straight sacs are the normal, general purpose sac found in most lever fill pens.
[edit] Necked Sacs
Necked sacs typically have a mouth that is smaller around than the back.
[edit] Tapered Sacs
A tapered sac becomes smaller as it gets further from the opening, creating a sac that is the reverse of the necked sac and is somewhat cone-shaped. Tapered sacs are rarely used, but might be found in pens like the Eversharp Skyline or in Parker Aerometric filler units.
[edit] Sizes
When you look into ordering sacs, you'll notice that the sizes are expressed by a number: #12, 14, 14 1/2, 15, 15 1/2, 16, 17, 17 1/2, 18, 20 and 22. This number is related to the outside diameter or O.D., expressed in 64ths of an inch. Thus, a #14 sac is 14/64ths (or 7/32nds for you reducing people out there) of an inch in outside diameter. Length is generally not an issue, since straight sacs are generally bought long, and cut to length. but with necked sacs you should check into length ahead of time.
