Getting started
This information is a good place to read up on generally how to use, and particularly edit, Penpedia. We are a MediaWiki shop, and if that means nothing to you, then look at Wikipedia. We are set up the same in terms of the software making things work, so if you know how to get around there, you'll be fine here.
Creating Pages
When in doubt, leave categories off, and let someone who knows where an item should go place it. In an effort to make the wiki as navigable as possible, we want to try to stick to a strict category structure. Don't make up your own category unless you are sure that it needs to be made. And then make sure it is under the right parent category.
Make titles descriptive. If you are making a pen profile for the Pilot Fermo, don't title it just "Fermo," make it use the full name "Pilot Fermo." Be sure to check that a page doesn't already exist for the article you want to create. Sometimes, information might be included in an already written page. If it needs to be broken out into it's own article, use discretion and link from where it was originally.
Editing Pages
If you changes facts of article, be sure to site the source of your information.
Avoid replacing one opinion with another. Instead, augment the other information with the new, and explain why the addition is warranted.
Images
Uploading images is accepted and highly encouraged. High quality photographs (or even low quality if nothing better is available) add a good amount of detail to an article. Make sure to credit photos where needed. You can add pictures at the Special:Upload page.
Citing Sources
If you wish to cite sources, doing so is easy. Once you have completed an edit, just follow it with the <ref>Your reference info</ref> markup. Then, at the end of the document, put {{ref-section}}. This will call the template for the reference section and build all footnotes for you based on what you put inside the <ref> tags in the article.
If you need to reuse a citation multiple times, add a name to it the first time, like <ref name="ref1">Your reference info</ref>. Then the second time you use it, all you have to put is <ref name="ref1" />.
Categories
The following is the category hierarchy used by Penpedia. Use it when searching for information, or tagging new articles. Create new categories only as they apply, and include them as proper subcategories where applicable.
