Back in the day, Sheaffer and Parker included sheets of rubber for this purpose in their repairmen’s kits. Plain old rubber worked, but it wasn’t the ideal material. (Thick enough, it wasn’t flexible enough; flexible enough, it was too thin.) It was just the best they had. But now there‘s better…
