Usually, as you know, the patients at the Nashua Pen Spa are fountain pens. Yesterday I worked on an oaken barrel labeled Château Lafite Rothschild. (I include a Château Lafite ’73 label here as corroborative detail deigned to lend verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.)

Big heavy barrel, solid oak, hoops of sterling silver. Silver? Umm, yeah, it did unscrew in the middle to reveal an Omas nib, so I went ahead and stubbed the nib. This isn’t a pen I’d want to own; it’s too large for me and too heavy to be comfortable, but y’know, I was impressed with its look and feel, and I can see why its owner fell for it…
