New Articles of Interest
Filed Under Wiki Updates | Leave a Comment
There’s been some nice growth going on in the wiki lately that I thought I’d point out in the news today. As always, any registered member is welcome to make corrections or additions to any article in the wiki, and can even make pages for things that are missing. A special thanks to those of you taking the time to contribute, you make it work!
First is a big article on the Fountainbel Cartridge. This little wonder allows relatively painless repair of Sheaffer Vac-Fill pens, and frequently can be done by anyone in under an hour. There is also pricing and ordering information in the entry, in case you need one. There will be additional pictures in the entry this evening. Read more

Why We Write
Filed Under Article | Leave a Comment
Frequently, I see the question raised by people both in the know and not, of why we choose to write with fountain pens. I think it is a good question, though also one with no straight answer. This is usually true for questions of this nature. It does, however, have a lot of interesting story to it. So I thought what the heck, I’d spin my thoughts on the matter, and see what the community thinks, too. So, what follows is my stream of consciousness opinion on the matter. Nothing is really researched, and a lot of it comes from my experience and the experiences of those I have talked to.
If you’ve been by the site recently, you might have noticed the poll I was running to the right asking why you used fountain pens. The results, highly unscientific and from a very small sample, were easily interpreted. More than three-quarters of those who responded said that it was everything: the look, feel, and the chance to be a little special. And let’s face it, who out there among us doesn’t draw a certain pleasure or satisfaction when we pull out our pen and hear someone say: “Wow, that sure is a nice pen!” No one, that’s who! But really, there’s more to it than that, and as my poll showed, it really is a combination of things. We are complex people using complex pens. Read more

Experience with a Namiki Vanishing Point
Filed Under Pens | 3 Comments
Few pens have been capable of developing the legacy that the Namiki Vanishing Point has. I recently came across a Namiki Vanishing Point over at the FPN Marketplace while browsing for something new to add to my collection. I’ve liked the design of them ever since I got to play with one that a buddy of mine had in his office (Thanks Roy!). I did some research on the pens, and discovered that my favorites were the later Namiki models of the Vanishing Point that were released before Pilot took over the branding. What sold me on this particular model was the single piece clip/end design. It was sleek and attractive, and I liked the finish on them more than the Pilots, which have a pressed on clip.
Needless to say, when luck happened to flow my way and just such a pen came up on FPN for $80, I jumped on it. It was a good deal, and the timing was perfect, since I wasn’t broke for a change. To date, this is the most expensive pen that I have bought (yeah, I know, I’m a cheapskate). I will certainly say that it is money well spent. At least in pen terms. I don’t think there’s any way to make someone who isn’t a pen person understand how more than $10 on a pen can be well spent, am I right? Read more

Logo Design Contest
Filed Under Site News | 4 Comments
With Penpedia now in full beta testing (I did get the RSS feed problem fixed!), it is time to start focusing on the look and feel. To begin the process, I thought this a good chance to do some community building. With incentive, naturally.
So, here’s the game. Two ways to win. The contest is two pronged. The first way to win is design a logo for Penpedia. The second way is to design a fancy header incorporating the Penpedia name. The two may end up combined for the web site header later, and used separately where applicable across the site. What’s it worth? Two fancy bottles of Noodler’s ink: Purple Wampum and La Coleur Royale. The winner of the logo contest gets first choice, the header will get the other. Read more

Category Structure available
Filed Under Wiki Updates | Leave a Comment
The following is the category structure as it is currently set up for the Penpedia wiki. You can use this to find what you need, or when creating articles. Remember, when you categorize an article (done with the markup [[Category:CategoryName]]), use the deepest applicable category. An article on Crescent Fillers need only be tagged with the Fillers category.
